July 2024: Sistema®, experts in food storage and hydration, is excited to announce the launch of its nationwide recycling contest aimed to promote environmental awareness and sustainability among primary school students.

The Sistema® Recycled Playground Contest challenges primary schools to collect as many used plastic food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps for the chance to win a new state-of-the-art playground with a frame made from 100% recycled materials including recycled plastic food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps for their school.

In partnership with recycling experts TerraCycle, Sistema® is calling upon school pupils, teachers, parents and their supporting communities to join forces in this eco-friendly initiative. By participating, schools have the chance to win a new playground and contribute to reducing plastic waste in their community.

Schools can register their interest in the contest from 8th July and once registered, they will be added to the Food Storage Container and Reusable Bottle Free Recycling Programme sponsored by Sistema® and will be sent all of the details of the contest once it begins on the 12th September.

Once schools have registered their interest and entered the contest in September, schools are then encouraged to collect and recycle as many plastic food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps as possible within the designated timeframe. Used food storage containers and plastic bottles from any brand will be accepted.

The school that collects the highest number of plastic food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps to send back to TerraCycle to be recycled will be awarded the grand prize; a playground with a frame made from 100% recycled materials, providing a safe and eco-friendly play area for school children. Additionally, the winning and runner-up school will also both win a Sistema® lunchbox and water bottle for each pupil in the participating schools. The full specification of the playground and prizes can be viewed in the terms and conditions featured on the registration page. The winners will be announced in January 2025.

On registration, each school will be given a welcome pack, inclusive of a downloadable participation guide, a decoration kit, a SoMe template, an email template and posters and the option for local PR support for the competition from TerraCycle. Schools will be able to monitor the amount of plastic waste they have sent in for recycling through a leaderboard on the Sistema® contest page on the TerraCycle website, which is updated on a monthly basis.

This nationwide competition not only promotes sustainability, but also educates students on the importance of recycling properly and caring for the environment. In the UK, food storage containers, lids and reusable plastic bottles and caps are not widely accepted through conventional kerbside recycling collections and so would otherwise end up in landfill if not recycled through the proper channels. By participating in this initiative, schools can instill valuable lessons in their pupils, whilst making an impactful difference within their community.
