7,395,218 Words Spelled in Ten Days: EdShed launches Bee Sieged Spelling Game

EdShed, the team behind the hugely popular Phonics Shed, Spelling Shed and MathShed platforms, has launched Bee Sieged, a new tower defence game designed to help pupils build their spelling skills in an exciting, age-appropriate way. After being available for just ten days, 100,196 children have already played 771,727 games and spelled an incredible 7,395,218 words.

With pupils’ interests evolving as they move through primary school, Bee Sieged has been created to ensure spelling practice stays relevant and engaging at every stage. Teachers are already seeing the benefits in the classroom. One teacher said: “A child in my class is absolutely loving this game. He struggles to regulate in class and has found that this helps him settle!”

In Bee Sieged, pupils must spell, sting and survive. The goal is to defend the queen bee against waves of enemies, from pesky ants to creepy bugs and even the terrifying bear claw. Players spell words between rounds to earn resources, strengthen their defences and see how long they can last.

Pupils can choose from different maps, including the hive, a picnic or ancient ruins and the game adapts to each learner’s spelling ability. Bee Sieged is fully integrated with Spelling Shed’s Mastery Zone, meaning word lists are automatically tailored to each pupil’s level. For new players, a quick diagnostic ensures the right level of challenge from the very start.

Rob Smith, chair of education at EdShed, said: “It’s important to keep our games relevant for children, especially as they progress through primary school. Bee Sieged has been created to offer a format that resonates with older pupils while still delivering the rigour and practice needed to support their development.

Already trusted by over 12,000 schools, 170,000 teachers and 2.5 million children worldwide, EdShed helps children everywhere build the core skills that underpin their learning journey.
