As the summer term gathers pace, many teachers are looking for ways to keep pupils motivated and focused – without adding to already full workloads. A new free resource from Premier League Primary Stars, created in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, aims to do exactly that.
Media Match Day uses the excitement of a Premier League fixture to build pupils’ literacy and media skills by taking them behind the scenes of Match Day – not onto the pitch, but into the media roles that bring football to millions of fans.
Through short, self‑contained activities, pupils step into the shoes of the people who plan Match Day adverts, write match reports, and shape the stories that travel from stadium to screen. The activities are designed to be accessible, engaging and easy to deliver, requiring no preparation from teachers.

Pupils are encouraged to:
- plan their own Match Day adverts, exploring audience, persuasion and creative writing
- write match reports, practising core journalism and reporting skills
- explore how stories reach fans, helping them understand media, communication and storytelling
Completely free and curriculum‑linked, Media Match Day can be used as a standalone lesson, a literacy enrichment activity, or a flexible end‑of‑term session. Developed with teachers, the resource is designed to support pupil engagement and wellbeing while offering a fresh, real‑world context for literacy learning.
Media Match Day is available now to all primary teachers at plprimarystars.com.
