Giving Students a Voice: How Cedar Lodge School Uses Digital Signage to Build Community

Digital signage software company, TrilbyTV, has released a new case study showcasing how Cedar Lodge School has used digital signage to build an inclusive, creative and celebratory school community over the past decade.

Located in Belfast, Cedar Lodge is a specialist school for children aged 3-19 with severe learning difficulties, complex needs, or medical difficulties. A recent visit to the school highlighted how digital signage has evolved into a platform where students are the creators, not just the audience.

Principal Chris Murphy explained that inclusive and student-centred communication is central to the schools’ vision to “create pupils for tomorrow’s world, today.”

He commented, “We’ve been using TrilbyTV here for the last 10 years… we’ve found it to be a fantastic tool to give our [pupils] a voice to celebrate their successes.”

Empowering Student Creators

The school’s investment in creative technology has underpinned its digital signage success. As an Apple Distinguished School, Cedar Lodge uses iPads, iMacs and Apple TV to allow students to produce content for screens around the building.

ICT and Technology Technician Matthew Harvey explained that the number of TrilbyTV screens has grown significantly in recent years, enabling tailored communication across different learning areas.

He said: “We can tailor our content to specific learning areas of the school and that has really allowed our sense of communication with pupils, with staff, with parents to feel seamless and create more of a school community.”

Using tools such as Adobe Express, alongside TrilbyTV, has helped students create polished content quickly, enhancing participation across the school.

Innovating Staff Support

Digital signage at Cedar Lodge is not limited to student content. Staff are encouraged to share achievements and key messages, supported through training and ongoing access to in-house resources.

Matthew noted, “it’s been really encouraging to see how quickly staff have embraced it.”

Celebration and community spirit

According to Chris Murphy, the screens play a key role in bringing the school together as a positive community, creating a fun and celebratory atmosphere.

A Year 12 student agreed, noting digital signage is “a great way to show off students’ creativity for everyone to see.”

After over a decade of use, Cedar Lodge continues to innovate with TrilbyTV. Chris said that evolving features within the platform has supported the school’s changing needs over time. This has allowed TrilbyTV to remain a core part of school life.

Matthew concluded by saying, “Having digital signage in your school is a no-brainer. If you want to keep up with the times and move forward with technology, I would highly recommend TrilbyTV.”
