Almost a third of A Level results are A* – more than three times the national average
Students at Leeds Mathematics School (LMaS) are celebrating securing an array of places at top universities and apprenticeships at leading firms after achieving outstanding A Level grades.
This is the first group of students to receive A level results since the state-funded specialist maths school, a partnership between The GORSE Academies Trust and the University of Leeds, opened in 2023.
Some 31% of all A Level results received today are top A* grades compared with the national average of 9.4%. Meanwhile six students achieved A* in all four A Level subjects they took, and three more achieved A* in all three subjects. Well over half of the grades achieved by LMaS students (59%) were A* or A, better than double the national average of 28.3%.
While all Leeds Mathematics School students have done incredibly well, some standout individual achievements include:
- Megan Hatherley, Francis Tempest, Brandon Loughrey, Daniel Wragg, Lauren Dalton, Oliver Wiffen, Tomoki Brown and Ben Robson, who all achieved straight A* grades.
- Megan has secured a place reading Physics at University of Oxford.
- Oliver Reed will attend Durham University to read Mathematics.
- Ben will be going to Leeds University to read Electrical Engineering.
- Tomoki has won a place at Manchester University to read Physics.
- Francis will be reading Mathematics at Bath University.
- Brandon is going to Birmingham University to read Maths.
- Daniel will read Computer Science and Maths at Durham University.
- Oliver Wiffen won a place at Durham University to read Maths.
- Lauren is also going to read Durham University, where she will read Natural Sciences.
- Mahir Ahmed, who has won an apprenticeship with Rolls Royce.
LMaS is one of only eight of these centres of excellence for post-16 mathematics teaching and learning. It provides world-class mathematics and mathematical sciences teaching in state-of-the-art facilities. These outstanding results, and the employment and higher education destinations secured, are a testament to the impact of the school’s high-quality teaching.
