Effective communication is a vital skill for success in the Uniformed Protective Services (UPS), whether in the Army, police, fire service, or emergency response teams. To support students working towards their Level 3 BTEC in UPS, the British Army Supporting Education programme has launched a brand-new and free UPS teaching resource – designed to help young people develop verbal and radio communication skills for real-world scenarios.
This latest addition to the Army’s UPS resource suite provides an engaging and interactive learning experience, helping students understand the role of communication in high-pressure situations inspired by real Army operations.
What’s included in the new resource?
The new resource offers up to 8 hours of adaptable content, focusing on key areas of Unit 5 and Unit 2. Students will explore face-to-face and radio communication, applying their learning to realistic UPS situations.
Lesson breakdown:
✅ Session 1: Introduction to communication (Unit 5: C1) – Exploring effective verbal communication in uniformed services.
✅ Session 2: Radio communication (Unit 5: C1) – Understanding standard voice procedure, the phonetic alphabet, digits, and prowords in a range of radio communication scenarios.
✅ Workshop: Teams, tension, and communication in disaster relief (Unit 2: F, Unit 5: B, Unit 5: C1) – Applying teamwork, leadership, and communication in a high-pressure scenario.
The lessons can be used independently or as a structured scheme of work, allowing students to build their knowledge and apply it in the interactive workshop.

✔ A video-led workshop exploring communication in high-pressure environments
