AO.com survey reveals surprising knowledge gaps in UK teens’ tech skills, despite being digital natives
A new survey has revealed the majority of children and teenagers are lacking basic computer skills – from turning a laptop off to connecting to WiFi.
The research, commissioned by electricals retailer AO.com, found that nearly two-thirds (67%) of 12 to 18-year-olds would need help turning their devices on or off.
Additionally, 62% said they were not confident connecting to WiFi, and 60% said they would need support using platforms like ChatGPT – despite being the first generation to grow up with AI at their fingertips.
The surprising findings highlight a widening digital confidence gap – where children may appear to be highly tech-savvy, but lack some of the foundational knowledge needed to use and care for their devices properly.
It comes as 1 in 3 parents also admit they’d benefit from going ‘back to school’ themselves to brush up on digital skills, with 43% believing their children or grandchildren already know more than they do. In reality, just 12% of children believe their parents know more about tech than they do.
Nick Bunce, Computing Expert at AO.com, said: “It might sound surprising that so many children need help with something as basic as switching a laptop on or off – especially when they’re so confident using apps, games and social media.
“But knowing how to use a laptop is very different from understanding how to look after one. Simple habits like, powering down properly instead of just closing the lid, can help improve performance and extend the life of a device.
“At this time of year, many families are getting to grips with new tech for the school term. It’s a great opportunity for parents and children to learn side by side – from setting up devices and connecting to WiFi, to exploring tools like ChatGPT in a safe and useful way.”
