As the school year draws to a close, Year 6 pupils are facing one of the most significant transitions of their academic lives – moving from primary to secondary school. To help ease this change and ensure students feel ready for what lies ahead, the Premier League Primary Stars programme has launched a brand-new, free resource: Team Talk: Preparation for Secondary School.
Designed to support teachers and empower students, this resource is specifically tailored to address the common challenges Year 6 pupils face during this crucial transition, from adapting to a new school environment to managing their independence and socialising in new groups.
What’s Included in the Team Talk Resource?
Team Talk: Preparation for Secondary School offers five engaging, football-inspired activities that are easy to implement in the classroom and designed to help pupils gain the confidence and skills they need for secondary school.
- Starting Line-Up
Students reflect on the changes they will face, considering what they will miss from primary school and what they’re looking forward to in secondary school. This activity encourages positive thinking about the transition. - Kick ‘Em Out
A fun, cathartic activity that helps students express their worries in a constructive way, “kicking” their fears away while discussing concerns in a supportive, safe environment. - Meet Your Team
Socialising with new people can be challenging. In this activity, pupils practice their listening and communication skills by interviewing their classmates, helping them become more confident in social settings. - Primary Star Preparations
A practical activity to help pupils get ready for the responsibilities that come with secondary school, such as staying organised, managing homework, and preparing for school days. - Teaming Up
This role play activity allows pupils to practice welcoming others and making new friends, crucial skills for adapting to new social environments. The activity includes tips for recognising body language and includes a helpful parent PDF for further support at home.
A Supportive Resource for Teachers and Parents
The Team Talk resource includes worksheets and a PowerPoint presentation to help guide pupils through each activity. Teachers can easily incorporate these activities into their lessons, helping pupils feel more confident and prepared as they transition to secondary school.
Moreover, the resource is designed to be flexible and can be adapted to meet the needs of all students, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The “Teaming Up” activity, in particular, offers helpful tips for facilitating positive interactions, making it an excellent choice for inclusive classrooms.
Parents and carers are also supported with a downloadable PDF, offering tips and conversation starters to continue the transition discussions at home.
